It is true that just because they are nearby does not automatically mean
they are all interesting or related.  However, there are many cases where
related links are right next to each other, and it is useful in those
situations.  Just because it is not useful in every imaginable situation
does not mean there aren't many situations where it is useful.  Common
situations I encounter include:

Lists of references or "see also" sources at the end of an article
Search results when the search engine does a good job
Lists of pictures (such as wallpapers or photos of a particular animal or
place)
Any sort of simple list of files, such as in the index.html page on a
website or websvn.kde.org

I can tell you I use the feature all the time in Firefox (it is provided by
Tab Mix Plus).
