the change was not made in a vacuum. we also received feedback pointing out problems with the existing approach, which some (inc you) would like to bring back. after weighing factors on both sides, we decided to change the current sorting approach, knowing fully well that no matter what we did someone would be unhappy about that decision :)

this has been explained before. it's even referenced in the bug report you link to. to simply keep bringing this up is, for lack of a better word, lacking respect. in life, sometimes people will respectfully disagree with each other as there is no one answer that can satisfy all but rather a multiplicity of answers each of which only satisfies some. it is better to acknowledge the disagreement than to keep trying to force change by endlessly bringing it up. 2 years on, we all have better things to do with our lives.

so this patch is rejected because:

* it has been thoroughly discussed already
* a configuration option is not acceptable for this as there are already too many such options
* there is a qml port that is pending; all changes to the c++ version of the applet have been suspended

if you wish to have a window list that sorts differently, my suggestion is this:

* help with, or wait for, the qml port
* when it comes out, create a fork of it that implements things the way you wish

"Effectively, we, the users, feel this is a feature regression, breaking a functionality that's worked in previous releases just fine."

i have always wondered who spoke for all of our users. and finally, we've found them!

Basically it boils down to people strongly voicing their opinions on their preference of a "column first" sorting order for the task bar when the "force rows" setting is enabled.

Interestingly enough, the negatively received change was only introduced in the 4.6 release. Effectively, we, the users, feel this is a feature regression, breaking a functionality that's worked in previous releases just fine.
