If I understand correctly, that's a really bad ID usability-wise. You show a 
preview and remove the dialog the user is operating on under his nose. If a 
preview is needed (and I seriously doubt that), then the way it was previously 
is much better than all that dynamic UI stuff, because it doesn't require the 
user to understand a new dialog when the preview appears, so less context 
switching. A tooltip, or something like that might work, though, and is a much 
more common metaphore for previewing something.
