:) practice makes perfect. I suggest writing a plasmoid and/or fixing some more 
bugs right away, to get more experience. feel free to ask us for help with 
that.
the summer of code program was originally designed for people like you, so if 
you keep in touch and keep learning and submit a thoughtful proposal, I think 
you've got a good chance of being one of the lucky accepted ones :)
