Help figuring out theming problem

Thanks much for your efffort Marco.  I've similarly tried to wade through the caching code and it made my head hurt. :-)
I'm thinking I'll open a new bug report, if for no other reason than to track the problem.  If anyone else has any ideas I'm all ears.
