Phonon

Thanks for the clarification. GPL /LGPL have indeed non obvious
implications.

Not even talking about conflicts, my main concern is also the simple
presence of a codec for a specified media. The goal being to simplify our
users' life, how can they for example embed a help video if they don't know
in which format they can ship it? This will not be addressed for Qt 4.4.

Thierry

Well, this is a bit more complicated and it will depend a lot on the
architecture.... Let me explain:

We have an ActiveX (COM) and a D-Bus module for VLC. They are GPL.
Anyway, some non-GPL applications uses those, without any problem
(checked with the FSF) since those interface are standards and in a
theorical world, you could remove VLC and use another application to act
like VLC and answer to the same commands.

Therefore, depending, how the 'discussion' goes, if you need to link
phonon to the back-end or not, if some other back-end exists, and if
your application does not depend on a special back-end, you could be able
to switch back end and use a GPL back-end even from a non-GPL
application.

Maybe I don't understood correctly what the FSF told me, surely my
understanding of phonon and KDE is very very poor, but anyway...
I guess a directshow back-end would be great but will not solve the
problems of codecs conflicts... :D

Anyway, I am here, and I will think about that after my Qt4 interface
bugs are gone. :D

Best Regards,
