First impression is crucial for user and i think making it transparent by default is important. Perhaps the good solution to let user that it is a plasmoid and know them limited area is to do what Marco Martin have done here (a pretty semi-transparent area", but only when the mouse is inside the plasmoid :  http://reviewboard.vidsolbach.de/r/17/

so by default :
- keep your transparent solution
when plasmoid has focus/mouse is coming over
- make the plasmoid semi-transparent like Marco does

What do all of you think about ?
