That's exactly what Havoc Pennington and other GNOME developers say and what has lead to the current state of GNOME 2 where there's hardly any option left. KDE, on the other hand, has always been about sane defaults, sure, but with the option to change them. This is exactly what the angry users are referring to when they say in rude and impolite ways that "KDE 4 is becoming the next GNOME". So let me respectfully disagree with that statement.
