I had this problem using a language other than English (in my case, Portuguese).

This (my) problem is that Kubuntu-KDE4 Remix (I don't know about Kubuntu KDE3 or any other version of Ubuntu) creates Desktop folder with the translated name instead of "Desktop" (again in my case, "Área de Trabalho"). So, folderview couldn't find the "Desktop" folder by default. Pointing it to that (ugly solution of) corresponding folder worked ok with 4.1 beta1.

I had the other problem too, not finding folderview in "Add Widget" list in beta2 and, again, I think it's kde4-plasmoids Ubuntu package's fault.

For both cases, I wouldn't be sure till I build KDE4.1 from trunk but, if confirmed by the reporter (or someone else), I think those are the problems (and then none would be about KDE4.1).
