apparently the utility of panel auto-hiding is not well understood by some who don't use it. it is quite different than "temporarily hiding it by clicking on the left/right" or "turning it off".
- it is like having a dial on your dashboard that you can place out of
the way, but see almost at a glance - just by flick the mouse to the
auto-expose area.
- it is the best compromise between maximizing screen area for active
windows and having easy access to the main desktop controls that the
panel embodies
personally, i've been compromising in the feature's absence by shrinking my panel - in kde 4.0, using the "custom" pixels-size setting, and in 4.1 beta and rc, the nicer, graphical size control. that's working ok, but i would much prefer to not have the clutter of and space occupied by the panel except when i actually need to glance at it...
