thanks for the explanation.

what you probably want to do then is work on the existing nowplaying 
dataengine in kdebase. you could add plugins to it, and then any applet built 
won't have to worry about this at all.

as for play/pause/etc, the engine should implement serviceForSource and 
provide a Plasma::Service that allows control of the player.
