This looks like an upstream patch from Kubuntu? (or it is scarily similar to 
what theyve done).  The problem I see with this highlight is the background 
is on the wrong layer -- it covers the arrow and makes it a weird grey 
instead of being behind it.

This color grey is more neutral and the gradient is nice too, but i think it 
lacks some kindof "shiney".

I'm going to send links to these and previous conceptions of full-width 
selection to the artists team.  Maybe they can take our ideas and polish 
them.
