Anyways, call me stupid, but I still don't get your points. According to
your lastest discussion on IRC, they are:

- clashes with icon colours (tight spaces make this suck even more),

Non issue. Icons are colorful and you simply *can't* get something that
works with everything.
Unless you use monocromatics icons, but that's not the route we're going to
follow.

- it doesn't direct the eyes to the meaningful content.

Celeste has already addressed it, no?

- it really clashes with the status bars on the computer tab.

Where exactly? It doesn't here.

- the other aspect is that there is so much negative space covered by full
width selection that there is no visual hint as to where the content is
