I don't see anything obviously wrong with this, but I don't feel like I
understand it too well either. it's past my bedtime.

I should have looked at these patches earlier; I committed the exact same
change earlier today. :)

looks fine... I was wondering if this might affect the sizehint, and then
noticed that that's hardcoded right now anyways.
