and yet it works when called from the kmenu or via kuniquapplication quite 
reliably.

how are you "launching" the krunner interface (key combo, kmenu, dbus, etc)? 
is there any pattern of behaviour that prevents this, e.g. not running an 
app?

please provide examples of the exact output you are seeing.
