I think that plasmoids replacing the "recent documents" and "recently used
apps" would be very useful. They should display those items on the desktop
with the possibility to make some of the entries stick.

The KMenu could be replaced by some zooming plasmoid. The plasmoid would be
placed on some part of the desktop, e.g. vertically on the left and just
display icons. If the user points to it, it reveals the lables to the icons,
i.e. Multimedia, System, Office etc. The user would point the mouse to the
office icon. The plasmoid then zoomes into the category, displaying the tasks
available, e.g. "create text-document", "create spread-sheet", "read/write
email" etc. If there is more than one application available for a certain
task, pointing at it would zoom into it and display the application icons.
This is based on the idea that once the user has chosen a category, such as
office, multimedia or system, s/hes looks for a task, rather than an
application.

All this can be done with just icons, or icons plus label/description.

Multimedia would offer tasks such as "Burn CD", "Play Video" or "Play Music".

Another thing I think is quite useful, at least for people who sometimes copy
files to their desktop, is to mark the icons with a certain background-colour
till they are clicked on/found the first time.
