Sorry, but I disagree here:
you are certainly right that it is preferable to generate shorter links in the
first place. However there are reasons for the current length of the links, this
is not a random effect or anything.
I don't see a real reason against shortening links and it offers a clear benefit
to users. This makes it an interesting option. There are lots of opinions and
statements out there about how evil link shortening is. But sorry, this time it
is me to say: that is total rubbish as a general statement. It still depends on
how you shorten, how you store, how you resolve and how you maintain
those links. The shortening in itself is neither good not evil.
