I was on the right track. A bit more digging helped to find this:
https://github.com/owncloud/apps/issues/487

Summary is that the OC web tasks app uses the first active calendar
without a configure option to choose.

Enabling this calendar in the sync adapter and the tasks app shows the
missing tasks.
