As a non-developer(just someone who follows the project and pokes the code
here and there):
I've responded as shown below[1]. In the future if you have questions like
this, I would suggest you look at the mail archives. This question can be
found by looking through those(also, don't be afraid to go look through the
commit history on github or do a diff of the two versions yourself). Here
is an email from yesterday[2] that can also point you in the right
direction. And a link with info[3].
Please feel free to look at things yourself to answer your own questions
Obviously no one is happy that the upgrades happened so often, but there
isn't much anyone can do about it at this point.
All of this was found with no special knowledge from myself, other than
Google and looking at the mailing list archives.

>From an outsider that watches Owncloud:
Generally there is a decent amount of time between releases. Major
version(the x in x.y.z) is for big changes or many updates, y is for medium
updates(usually just security updates or very stable updates) and z is for
small fixes(often showstopper bugs).
Owncloud was hit with some pretty nasty/showstopper bugs, that needed to be
resolved quickly. While it stinks that the updates had to happen like this,
there wasn't much choice. Hopefully in the future this won't happen - I'm
sure there is and will be discussion on the topic to stop issues like this
from happening again.

Hi everybody,

just a brief heads up for everybody.

As you know we released 5.0.2 today. Unfortunately this introduced a nasty
upgrade bug:
https://github.com/owncloud/core/issues/2642

I created a RC1 that can be used for testing with this bug fixed.
download.owncloud.org/community/owncloud-5.0.3.RC1.tar.bz2

There is one more bug that has to be fixed for the next release. Volunteers
welcome.
https://github.com/owncloud/core/issues/2654

If everything goes right we plan to release 5.0.3 tomorrow noon.

Thanks to everyone for the understanding and sorry for the trouble.

Frank
