Incidentally, caret annotations have been part of the official PDF standard
since PDF 1.5.  (That is, they're a distinct type of annotation, not a kind of
stamp.)  They are documented in §12.5.6.11 of the PDF 1.7 specification:

support caret annotations in its UI.
