If the system fails to unmount some filesystem, it does reboot without 
unmounting after some timeout. I think I saw something like this happen on a 
system running Upstart and Virtuoso, but no GUI and not an Ubuntu derivative. 
This might be also a bug somewhere deep in the system, because filesystem 
unmounting is supposed to happen after services shut down.

Also, I'd at least expect that the data is fsynced to the disk, so  unclean 
shutdown doesn't lead to data loss at least outside of virtuoso db, but then 
again such an assumption is just as valid as expecting for unmounting to 
happen after the database (forcibly) goes down ;)
