current camera status and possible development

Hi all, I might have some founding soon to work on this stuff, what is
the current status of the camera implementation? I'd need to be able to
take a picture from within a necessitas app.
anybody doing this in beta1? any hints?

the todo says Proper camera implementation, there is a bug report[1] and
there are these and there is [2] and [3].

what would the best way to go develop it?
