Thanks you for all the comments. I've addressed some of them and others such as performance in https://github.com/oberluz/marble which is where I'm now keeping it up to date with master. The panning method has been reverted back to scanline without performace issues this time. I'll address the remaining issues from next week as I'm about to go on a trip. Thanks again.
