The current Atlas map view is using some 1GB version of this gridded data:

which was processed using the GMT tools to create the desired byte vs. 
elevation profile to get proper colors.

From what I understand the Cleantopo2 data mentioned before improves this data 
even more. So maybe for lower zoom levels we should use CleanTopo for the 
Elevation Profile?
