As of today the list of files is a list of strings shown from the plugin.

I am thinking that a toggle option for showing Git ignored files could 
be an easy way forward,

since otherwise we would have to change from a list of string to some 
sort of string with additional metadata,

which would be useful for Git but I am not sure for the other VCS systems.
