How can i make kate behaviour go back to normal?

I read this as "a modal dialog is bad", but maybe you meant something else 
with "block the editor when the dialog is open".

So, instead of opening a separate settings dialog as almost any other KDE 
application the user should now open a separate view themselves? Do you 
realize how ironic this is?

And with regard to switching views with a Kate-specific keyboard shortcut, I 
switch all the time between different windows (including settings dialogs) of 
the same or different applications with Alt+Tab. How does having to learn and 
use a different keyboard shortcut in Kate improve the UX?
