Symbols create a question mark "?"

Probably your file is saved by some Windows tool in a legacy encoding 
which cannot encode the characters you are pasting. Kate detects this 
encoding and also uses it again on save, corrupting the pasted text.

Make sure you have Tools -> Encoding -> Unicode -> UTF8 selected before 
saving and this shouldn't happen.
