This is certainly not a direct dependency. It's possible that it is
unneeded (and a packaging bug), or pulled in through a chain of
dependencies by something else. Ask your distribution's packagers, or
look through the dependency list (preferably with a suitable tool)
yourself. I could imagine something like ktexteditor -> kio -> knotify
-> phonon -> phonon-backend-vlc -> vlc or similar. Each of the
dependencies kind of makes sense but the end result is strange.
