Might be the case here as well, but I can't tell it right now. I've found a 
"solution" to have both DMA and no crash by setting the DMA to UDMA3, which 
is of course slower than the UDMA5 supported by the motherboard and the HDD. 
This way I couldn't freeze the PC even when doing a "hdparm -t /dev/hda", 
while with UDMA4 or above it always hanged.

Yes, it looks like a hardware problem, but i'm wondering if they can solve the 
problem with a BIOS update, isn't it possible to solve also from the drivers?

Good hint, I should look at it, although I don't recall seeing such settings 
in this BIOS.
