strange... very strange. you may also try xawdecode from plf.zarb.org , but i 
doubt it would change anything.

ok, then it's not the prefix the problem (should be ./configure --prefix=/usr)

does "lsmod" lists module "bttv" ? if not, try making "modprobe bttv" or 
"insmod bttv" before loading X.
did you try your TV card and know that it is working ?
