WIP: Code refactoring unifying capture initialization

Hello Wolfgang,

So if you performed extensive testing on this and documented your changes,
I'll check if it can be merged. From what I learned, it's only going to be
really tested by users once it lands in nightlies. So we have the option to
revert if it breaks any workflows.
