After digging a little deeper, it looks like the configure check is
failing because gcc is warning that -mcpu is deprecated (configure seems
to think that any output to stderr means that -fPIC was not found).
Anyone know how to workaround this, like tell it not to use mcpu?  The
exact warning gcc gives is:
`-mcpu=' is deprecated. Use `-mtune=' or '-march=' instead.
