Yes, this is necessary. The KDE client can fully understand the internal
format of Outlook.

It is unfortunately impossible to share a calendar between kmail and
outlook. Again the reason is the proprietary format of outlook that is
the problem. And there is no way to tell outlook to save it's files in
another format.
It will require way too much work for us to do this for the current
release, but we will continue searching for the funding to implement
this.
