As a rule of thumb, Free Software
(I like that term a lot better than open source)
has cost advantages in the mid- or long term.
Especially when you seriously consider the total cost
of operation.
Compare to: http://www.dwheeler.com/oss_fs_why.html#tco

The initial or so to say short term costs to use Free Software
in some situations might even be higher then the cost for a
proprietary solution. In the mid term the advantages are there.
This is also the reason why you get many gratis or "cheap" licenses
for proprietary software: They know that will make a business from
you later, after building und the dependency.
