It was a big job to get it completely done, but it could be that the
mozilla client is easier, if it's already got integrated components.
I keep hoping the mozilla people will pick it up.

Yes, this is also what KMail does now (that was part of the project). And
AFAIK, mozilla already has disconnected IMAP.
