Bynari uses cyrus imap 1.x, openldap 1, exim and they come with
a proprietary cgi-bin (binary only, no source code) as webinterface.
The bynari server is license restricted.
Kolab uses the latest versions of cyrus imap 2, openldap 2, postfix
as well as TLS-secured client-server protocols and it comes as
open source, even free software, where applicable, without adding _any_
sort of license restrictions.
Really, it's no surprise that someone building an oss based groupware solution
will end up using apache, cyrus imap, openldap, postfix, etc.
This oss projects provide numerous features as well as good performance and
stability, etc. etc.

There is no relation.

Not at all.

The insight connector makes outlook use imap instead of mapi.
Once that is achieved every OSS or whatever imap server can be used as
groupware server. We found that very practical for the time being but
consider it being a temporary solution ("best practice").
In the long run we want to see open source software on the windows
client also, if windows as client platform is desired.
The oss community can only support open source software.
In short, the Kolab server is meant to support a set of open interfaces and
protocols, use oss components to do so, _and_ itself be an open source
software project.
