You're correct -- I was typing too soon in the morning.  I didn't run make -f 
Makefile.cvs until AFTER I couldn't find a Makefile. 

I have, however found my problem.  I compile KDE from CVS quite often and I 
just copied the ./configure statement I use for KDE without reviewing it --  
I had --no-create and --no-recursion in there as well, which is of course 
suppressing the creation of the necessary files, Makefile among them.
