IIRC there are three modes you can run IMAP with: online mode, which
does what it obviously says, offline mode, similar to POP3 (fetch all
messages, then delete + expunge them on the server), and disconnected
mode (fetch all messages, but do not delete and expunge them). What
you mean, is disconnected mode, but don't mind: this is a part of
IMAP that is not really well known, even to IMAP admins (neither to
users :-)).
