SRV records (and PTR records, like rendezvous does) can help too, but they
tend to be a PITA to administer if your network changes too often (or if
you're into zeroconf, like I am). Also, you can't do smart searches (tell me
the SMTP host for workgroup=engineering) with DNS.
I'd eventually like to see a service discovery system that presented a unified
application interface, and worked with whatever back-end was enabled (kind of
like the Name Service Switch). Smart design would abstract service
registration and service discovery implementation from the rest of the system
in any case.
