To finally answer your question: Yes, it's for Outlook compatibity.
Bynari uses IMAP, so we must, too, at least in the first stages[1] of
the project where there's no FS Windows client available (apart from
KMail/KOrganzier on cygwin).
Oh, and we use http (webdav) for the free/busy lists.
