make clean && cmake clean .

However, this does not clean everything generated. I do not know any
more powerful way than this except for the rm. The different build
directory as suggested earlier today along with rm is easy enough to
get to a clean state.

This sounds rather strange. I have had a "brief freezes" upon starting
KPA occasionally but waiting for a minute at most has been enough to
get up and running. I think my freezes are related to thumbnail
generation, but not sure.

If you really have a solid freeze a bit more digging is in order.
