You're right, it doesn't look that good..

#Borders to images instead of grid

I think white (=high contrast on dark background, I'd guess about the
same for black border on white background) increases visibility a lot.
Now, without the grid (and especially with dark images & background)
it's difficult to see the image itself and not as a part of 'whole',
the thumbail view photo mass..

#Thumbnail / cell size
And I also think that most images people take are landscape: therefore
it would be great if the photo 'cell' in the thumbnail view could
adapt to this and wouldn't be that high: the 'thumbnail size' could
define actually the width (w) of the cell and then all images would be
scaled to fit to area thats w px wide and 0.66*w px high (to match 2:3
proportions). Of course some would like to be able to customize this,
but if one was able to manuallly define the portrait of 'a default
photo', that would help to save a lot of space in the thumbnail view.

Now there is a lot of space reserved just in case there is a portrait
photo around..
