Doesn't Ctrl+MouseButton (or Shift+MouseButton) break selecting of 
invidual (or range of) thumbnails?

Many (KDE) programs use Ctrl+MouseWheel for zooming in/out (for example 
KPDF and Konqueror). IMHO it would be a logical choice for this function 
too.
