[KPhotoAlbum] order criteria for a family photo collection

Ah, this _is_ about extracting metadata from filenames.  

I assume this 'scan number' is the identity of scan-set of photos.  I
would do something along the lines of setting KPA up for scan number
(Settings -> Configure... and add 'Scan number' to the list where you
see 'Locations' etc.), add a dummy scan number to all new images (so
there exists

<option name="Scan number">
  <value value="thedummynum" />
</option> 

inside <image> in index.xml) and write a script which processes
index.xml, extracts scan number from filename and replaces respective
thedummynum with the extracted num.

Then you would have your scan number in KPA.  There would be 'Scan
number' in KPA main window (in addition to the defaults, 'Locations'
etc., if you haven't removed them).  Click that and you would see list
of scan numbers and amounts of images belonging to each of the
scan-set of photos.

Would that be what you want?
