So this "remote places" is using KIOSlave to access those folders (i.e. 
smb:// protocol). Right?

KPhotoAlbum doesn't support KIOSlaves (yet), so you have to mount those 
shares using operating systems mount command (as root):

mkdir /some/directory
mount -t smbfs //machine/share /some/directory
