I moved back to released 2.2 AND moved away the index.xml file.

after the initial (long) time to index the 17.000 images restarting the DB is 
short (some 5 seconds).

But this way I would loose all my taggings. 

reusing my "old" index file, I get all the problems again, so IMHO the index 
file is broken.
