   well you still have it in the status bar just hover the mouse over
   the image.

   Please explain why this isn't good enough.

Two reasons are that you can only see one filename at a time by
hovering, and you have to look away from the thumbnail to see the
filename.

Hovering as a way to display the EXIF data would be fine, but the
filename is the basic identifier for the image.  Think in terms of an
icon view anywhere else (desktop icons, icon views in a file browser,
etc.) -- the name is always displayed.
