Well, your missive inspired me to go try updating hugin, since the version 
I've been using was from late 2003, and I ran into exactly the same error and 
segfault you did with the 10/2004 tarball.

I think that snapshot is just broken.  I glanced at the code for a couple 
minutes but it wasn't obvious how to fix it.  So I grabbed the 07/2004 
tarball and it build, installed and ran without a hitch.  I stitched a couple 
of panoramas without any crashes.  Of course, like most crash-prone software, 
hugin's likelihood of crashing is proportional to the amount of work you've 
done since your last save.

So, I'd give the 7/2004 one a try if I were you, and see if that works better 
for you.
