I played around with P on Windows and Hugin(GUI for panotools) on Linux.
But as stated before, many times I did not got hugin working (eg. on 
Gentoo) - and if its working, its very complicated to get a good pano.
There is a gimp-plugin of panotools to use it in gimp.
Maybe you want to throw a look on that.
I think this should be the way to get that integrated - via a kipi plugin.
A friend has bought a new Nikon Coolpix and there is a very easy 
Panorama Software from Nikon included.
