More on this:
This is really a 4.4 specific issue, as it wasn't happening in 4.3. I detected
it firstly after upgrading to 4.4 in Gentoo (sorry for not reporting - my bad
:( ).

I'm not using Gentoo anymore, but from what I can recall, I can confirm the
following combinations:

  - Gentoo KDE 4.3: works fine
  - Gentoo KDE 4.4: bug
  - OpenSUSE 11.2 (4.3): works fine
  - OpenSUSE 11.2 (Factory -> 4.4): bug
  - Kubuntu 10.04 (4.4): bug
